About
Visser Visible Communication was founded by Hermen Visser. He collaborates with several other trainers, but most often with Kick Moors. Together they offer a complete portfolio of training and support directed at communication by academics. The main focus of Kick is what happens inside the presenter (e.g. body language, use of voice and stress) and Hermen is specialized in the effect of communication on the audience (strategy, storyline and design).
Visser Visible Communication is based in The Netherlands and our expertise is grounded in working in the Dutch and Western European setting. Our clients are mostly academics working at Dutch universities and institutes, but we are open for universities and institutes from abroad.
Hermen Visser
Hermen Visser (1985) studied Biology at Leiden University. Already during his studies he developed a passion for science communication and took his first steps as a trainer. He taught students in layout skills and the graphic software Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. Since his graduation in 2011 he works as a freelance science journalist and trainer. He was radio and web editor at the editorial offices of the Dutch broadcasting agencies VPRO and NTR. Currently he writes as a freelancer for VPRO Gids and Trouw.
As a trainer Hermen Visser helped hundreds of academics with their preparations for the interviews at NWO (e.g. Veni, Vidi, Vici, Gravitation and NWO Large) and ERC (Starting, Consolidator, and Advanced). His specialization is perfecting the storyline and slides. He also developed and gives trainings in presenting with PowerPoint, pitching, the design of academic posters, networking, and trainings regarding traditional and social media. He regularly speaks or moderates panel discussions on conferences and symposia. Furthermore, he designs slides and illustrations for research proposals. He does these things from an understanding of research and he is able to quickly get the core and from there create powerful communication. His motto: ‘If I do not get it, it is not right.’
Hermen is committed to bridging the gap between the ivory tower and the broader audience. Over the years he developed several initiatives that stimulate the contact between academia an society. He is co-founder of Science ON AIR, a company that is specialized in science communication, and Wetenschap.nu, a Dutch academic blog. In Leiden he started the still existing radio show Science071 that is made by master students of journalism. He also is co-organiser and of the yearly symposium for academic bloggers and co-founder and organizer of Kenniscafé Assen.
