Networking in Academia

As an academic researcher, a robust professional network is an invaluable asset. When you need external expertise, research partners, new knowledge, or want to disseminate your ideas, a strong network provides vital connections. It’s where you find inspiration, support, and pathways to the next step in your career. However, building and sustaining these connections effectively can feel challenging. This workshop equips you with the practical strategies and confidence to cultivate a thriving academic network.

This workshop is designed to help you:

  • Understand the full spectrum of benefits a strong network offers your academic journey.
  • Identify and leverage key networking opportunities effectively.
  • Develop the confidence and skills to initiate and maintain valuable professional relationships.
  • Integrate networking seamlessly into your busy academic life.

What You Will Learn

This workshop explores the why, what, and how of successful networking in academia. We blend foundational theory with hands-on practice, empowering you to build meaningful connections.

Part 1: Strategy & Opportunity
We begin by clearly outlining the tangible benefits of a well-developed network for your research and career. We then dive into identifying various networking opportunities within academia and beyond, and how you can optimally benefit from each. You’ll learn to strategically approach these opportunities, turning potential contacts into valuable connections.

Part 2: Making & Maintaining Connections
This section focuses on the practical execution of networking. We acknowledge that initiating contact, especially with a world-famous expert at a conference, is often “easier said than done.” Therefore, we’ll practice various approaches to making initial contact, teaching you how to significantly increase the chances of a successful first encounter. Once the ice is broken, maintaining your network is key. We’ll show you effective methods for nurturing relationships to ensure your network remains active and beneficial. Finally, we’ll provide guidance on finding time for networking and integrating it as a natural part of your academic life.
